Energy efficient skylights can improve your home, office or warehouse energy efficiency as the need for electricity consuming light bulbs is reduced. An even better choice is an energy efficient tubular skylight. This design takes the sunlight and reflects it through a tube and then out a diffuser into your office or warehouse complex.
This design has several advantages over electricity consuming light bulbs whether the normal incandescent or fluorescent types. First off, light bulbs or a traditional bubble style skylight creates heat. This adds to the air conditioning load of the building. So while you may get some free light you have to subtract the additional cooling load. Another advantage is you will get 100% of the visible light spectrum. This is light we all need for our Acadian rhythm. Another advantage is sunlight helps improve the trueness of color we see and reduces eye strain.
Larger tubular skylights can produce a wattage equivalent of 1000 to 1400 watts of light. This can quickly replace a large number of light bulbs at a cost of what a high end light fixture would cost. Even a 10" tubular skylight can provide the equivalent of up to three 100 watt light bulbs in your home.
Typical installation takes two hours. For the best results choose a design that doesn't require elbows which lowers the unit's light reflectivity. Choose one that has a compensation system, a collar that can expand and contract that attaches the dome to the tube and a slightly domed diffuser which will throw the light farther into the room. A reflectivity of 96% or better is good. Look for the Energy Star rating on better units and if you live in a hurricane area choose a unit that is hurricane rated as well.
Make the right choice and your tubular skylight will last years. Years of natural daylight and energy savings for approximately the price of a high end light fixture.
